THE GIRIAMA

The Giriama (Agiryama) people are Bantus living along the coastal areas of Kenya. They have migrated from Shingwaya in the north eastern sides of Kenyan coast bordering the Oromo.
They largely live along the Kenya coast, mostly found in the Kilifi and Malindi district. They are found also sparsely in Mombasa and Kwale Districts of the coast province.
The Giriamas were largely farmers, hunters and gatherers. They currently farm, though in really small scale. The crops they plant include perennials like coconuts and cashew nuts which act as main cash crops. They also plant Maize, Millet and peas. The Giriamas are largely social, leaving in extended families though recently the trend seems to be dropped. They live in Makuti thatched houses mostly which are mud walled, but recently iron sheets and brick structures have started to be common. Some take advanced of the close proximity to the Indian ocean by fishing though is small scale. those that do this practice it purely for subsistence.

The Giriamas were originally traditionalist, believing in idols, called the Koma. They used to sacrifice at the Koma, nearly on weekly basis. Sacrifices included Alcohol (the traditional Manazi) which is palm wine. They believe that the koma were actually the representatives of the living dead, they would therefor name the komas with names of all the elders that have gone before them. The koma was a curves piece of wood, and the eldest of them that have already gone before them was represented with a bigger piece of wood called the Kigango. When trouble befalls a family, they would sometime go to sacrifice by the koma side, sometimes porridge and blood would be used. The Giriama however are now largely migrating from these believes and majorly have become Christians, with some few becoming muslims. There are a few however that still practice the tradition religion. They also believed in witchcraft.

The Giriama's need largely Education and Evangelism. The preaching previously of the gospel was not of accepting the Lord Jesus the Christ but was rather on going to church which resulted in many going to church whilst still practicing their religion and traditional beliefs.

IS IT WILLINGLY OR A CATCH 22?

The bright brilliant and serene Sunday was changed to be a fateful day after the mouths of many students in the campus and other people around were left wide open by the dead body of the 1 day old baby boy in a paper bag at the Soweto rubbish pit.
The baby who was found by some children who were in their daily duty of finding some precious items at the pit, was well tied in the paper together with his umbilical cord tied severally along his neck and clots of blood all over his body   which brought it out that it was a newly born baby just denied his right of life and later disposed in the green paper bag.  The murder case was also evidenced by the mother’s clothes, totally wet in fresh blood that was disposed just beside the baby.

So many people condemned the event but the questions that rang and still disturbing most of them is “why did the mother decide to waste the boy?” were it willingly or a catch -22? The environment surrounding the incident cannot really explain the reason but it’s the parents who are aware of the inner core of the whole story.
The baby boy was later taken by the police for a better resting place for his soul. All we can say is “REST IN PEACE BABY BOY.

24 HOURS WITHOUT WATER

Residents of the Soweto hostels in the campus were forced to do all their activities without water following the drying up of the taps for a whole day on Saturday. The students as usual had woken up early in the morning ready for their washing activities of the weekend only to find the whole of the Soweto section taps had no water.

Usually, the students are notified a day before  if any shortage of the kind is expected but this time, the water crisis caught them unawares leaving most of the them  stranded not knowing what to do being that it was on a weekend, a time when most of the students  do their cleaning.

Being unaware of the crisis, some students left their water carrying containers at the taps hoping water would come and the containers be filled. The containers left the taps unfilled with this commodity because there was no a single tap that could ran water until the following day.

According to the janitors in charge of the various Soweto hostels, the crisis was all because of the renovation of the school   water system that forced the closing up of the main water channels leading to the campus.

Most of the residence of these hostels condemned the incident saying that a shortage of the kind expected, should be informed to them earlier so that they could be prepared and armed.
